New Animal Welfare License Plate Helps Protect Animals in Need

Delaware Health and Social Services | Division of Public Health | Newsroom | Date Posted: Wednesday, May 21, 2025

The Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) is introducing its new Animal Welfare License Plate, designed to support initiatives that enhance the well-being of companion animals across the state. This license plate, available now through the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), serves as a visible commitment to animal welfare while contributing to programs that protect animals in need.

“We are excited to share that the Animal Welfare License Plate is now road-ready for Delaware residents,” said Christina Motoyoshi, director of OAW. “This initiative not only shows OAW’s commitment to animal welfare but also provides a unique way for residents to drive with a purpose and support the cause. We are looking forward to seeing the community embrace this opportunity to make a difference.”

This special license plate features colorful illustrations of various animals set against a scenic outdoor background. Of the one-time fee of $50, $35 from the sale of this plate goes into the State Spay Neuter Fund aimed at reducing animal homelessness.

“Spaying and neutering are the most effective and humane ways to control pet populations, but the services can be out of reach for some pet owners,” said Joanna Miller, deputy director of OAW. “Revenue is used to provide spay and neuter surgeries for low-income pet owners, community cat programs, and to supplement spay and neuter funds for Delaware shelters and rescues.”

To get your paws on the new Animal Welfare License Plate, order it online at de.gov/petplate. If ordering by mail, an Animal Plate application must accompany the order, and the plate will be shipped to the address provided on the application. A new plate can be ordered at any time without waiting for registration to expire.
